Since 1951. Home of the Hercules Flip, a shake that packed 37 grams of protein, which the menu proudly clocked at 75 percent of your daily recommended allowance. They were counting your macros before anybody called them macros.
The front is the mascot that said it all. Hercules himself riding a wave with dumbbells flying, chugging a Flip mid-ride like it was the most natural thing in the world. Muscles, sherbet, and the ocean. That was Ventura's entire idea of health food, and honestly it still holds up.
Then you flip it around and get the whole board. The full Kayser's menu is printed on the back, the way it actually read. The Hercules Flip in vanilla, chocolate, carob, and mocha, or Premium with fresh orange juice and quick-frozen boysenberries. The Hawaiian Eye, pineapple and lime, billed as the next best thing to a week in Maui. The Monkey Flip, banana and peanut butter, supposedly the drink of the Santa Barbara elite. The Palm Desert Date Shake made with real crushed dates. The Kaysers Krush for a hot afternoon. Somebody standing behind you can read your whole order off your back.
It's gone now. You can get a protein shake on any corner in town, and not one of them has a surfing Hercules on the cup.
